NEET 2027 Physics: Which Chapters Should You Prioritise?
Physics can become one of the most difficult parts of NEET preparation when students try to study every chapter with the same intensity. A better approach is to first build strong fundamentals in chapters that support multiple concepts and then expand coverage across the syllabus.
The latest officially available NEET syllabus is the NEET UG 2026 syllabus notified by the National Medical Commission. 1. Current Electricity
Current Electricity should be among the first chapters on your high-priority list because it combines formulas with numerical application. Focus on Ohm's law, resistance, resistivity, series and parallel combinations, Kirchhoff's laws, electrical energy and power, cells and internal resistance. Don't study this chapter only by memorising formulas. Solve progressively harder circuit questions so that you learn how to identify which relationship is actually required.
2. Electrostatic Potential & Capacitance
This chapter becomes much easier when you understand the relationship between electric field, potential, potential difference and capacitance instead of treating them as separate formulas. Pay particular attention to capacitors, combinations of capacitors, energy stored in a capacitor and the effect of dielectric materials. A strong understanding here also makes later electrostatics questions easier to approach.
3. Ray Optics & Optical Instruments
Ray Optics contains several concepts that can be converted into diagram-based questions. Your preparation should cover reflection, refraction, spherical mirrors, lenses, lens formula, magnification, total internal reflection and optical instruments. The latest NMC syllabus explicitly includes mirrors, lenses, refraction through prisms and optical instruments under Optics. Make diagrams part of your preparation rather than trying to solve every optics question algebraically.
4. Laws of Motion
Laws of Motion is a foundation chapter. Newton's laws, free-body diagrams, friction, momentum and impulse are not concepts you should leave weak if you want to become comfortable with mechanics. The official syllabus includes Newton's laws, momentum and impulse within this unit. Before moving to more complicated mechanics, make sure you can draw a correct free-body diagram and identify all forces acting on an object.
5. Work, Energy & Power
Work, Energy & Power is useful because it gives you another way to approach mechanics problems. Focus on work done by a force, kinetic energy, potential energy, conservation of mechanical energy, power and collisions where applicable to the syllabus. The goal should be to recognise when an energy-based approach is shorter than solving the same problem using forces and acceleration.
6. Kinematics
Kinematics should be completed early because it provides the mathematical language needed for later mechanics. Focus on velocity-time and position-time graphs, uniformly accelerated motion, vectors, relative velocity, projectile motion and circular motion. The official NEET syllabus specifically includes these areas under Kinematics. If you struggle with graphs here, don't rush ahead. Fixing that weakness early can make subsequent mechanics chapters considerably easier.
7. Moving Charges & Magnetism
Moving Charges & Magnetism requires conceptual clarity as well as numerical practice. Prioritise Lorentz force, force on current-carrying conductors, motion of charged particles in magnetic fields, Biot-Savart law, Ampere's law and magnetic-field applications according to the current syllabus. Don't try to memorise the direction rules mechanically. Practise drawing the relevant vectors and determining the direction step by step.
8. Semiconductor Electronics
Semiconductor Electronics is comparatively compact but should not be ignored. Focus on semiconductors, intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, p-n junctions, diode characteristics, rectifiers, LED, photodiode, solar cell, Zener diode and logic gates as applicable to the current syllabus.
The latest syllabus specifically includes semiconductor materials, p-n junctions, diodes, applications and logic gates. Because this chapter has several clearly defined concepts, make a concise revision sheet after completing it.
9. Dual Nature, Atoms & Nuclei
Modern Physics should be treated as a connected block rather than three completely unrelated chapters. Cover photoelectric effect, Einstein's photoelectric equation, de Broglie wavelength, atomic models, Bohr's model, energy levels, nuclear properties, radioactivity and binding-energy-related concepts included in the syllabus. Once the basic concepts are clear, regular question practice becomes more useful than repeatedly rereading theory.
10. Thermodynamics
Thermodynamics requires students to understand the physical meaning behind equations. Focus on thermal equilibrium, temperature, heat, work, internal energy, the first law of thermodynamics and related thermodynamic processes covered in the NEET syllabus.
Don't memorise sign conventions without understanding what the system is doing. Draw the situation and identify whether heat enters or leaves and whether work is done by or on the system.
